General information Apodi is famous for holding one of the most important archeological sites of  Northeastern Brazil, o Lajedo de Soledade, besides the natural beauty of the Region that includes the  Lagoa do Apodi (lake) and the Barragem Santa Cruz (dam). The city has important petroleum and gas reserves , and its economy also is based on the fruit culture and beekeeping. One of the urban attractions is the Church  Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, constructed in 1740.

Lajedo Soledade
The archeological site presents caves and primitive paintings and drawings representing animals, people, nature and hunting and fishing activities. Besides this, there are even animal fossils of mastodons, saber-tooth tigers, armadillos and giant sloths from approximately 90 million years ago. This region was a shallow sea, and with the waters receding, a great extension of calcareous rock emerged. Rich in calcareous rock, the site was a source for the community extract the rock to produce lime. The removal  with explosives of a gunpowder base threatened the paintings,as also the action of opportunists who pulled off pieces to sell, or even engraved their names on the drawings. The exploration and extraction of the calcareous rock lasts until today, but far from the archeological site.

How to get there Distance from  Natal: 420 km

Leave Natal on  BR-304 to the municipality of  Assu, and from there take  RN-233.
